Manchester United suffer ‘dressing room backlash’ over last-ditch Paul Pogba ‘offer’ and more transfer rumours

The Manchester United dressing room is in uproar after the club offered Paul Pogba a new mega-money deal which would make him the highest earner in the Premier League, a report has claimed.

The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has already been approached by Paris Saint-Germain over a potential move. But United have apparently attempted to keep hold of the 29-year-old with a last-ditch £500,000-a-week offer.

That’s according to the Mirror, which reports that, if accepted, Pogba would become the highest-paid footballer in the UK, trumping Cristiano Ronaldo’s £450,000 weekly wage packet. However, it says the offer has caused further friction among the United squad.

The source claims players are angry with the valuation, given Pogba’s inconsistent playing time and frequent comments about leaving Old Trafford during his stay. It described how players will perform a ‘mutiny’ if the deal goes through.

Pogba would be receiving a lot more than long-serving squad member David De Gea, who is on a £375,000-a-week salary, and double that of Bruno Fernandes’ £250,000 weekly income. That said, it looks unlikely that Pogba will stay on at Old Trafford.

The World Cup winner was waiting to see whether there was a pathway to finance-stricken Juventus. But the midfielder is now said to be keen on a move to PSG, inferring that the Old Lady door remained closed.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports reports that United are to battle Tottenham for the signature of West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The England shot stopper has refused to sign a new deal at the Baggies and will let his contract run dry this summer.

United already have good connections with Johnstone, after the player came through the club’s youth system. This news comes as Dean Henderson could seek a move away from Old Trafford having been handed limited game time since deciding to stay on at the club.

Tottenham were reportedly close to signing Johnstone, 29, in January. Antonio Conte is eager for Hugo Lloris to have more competition with the Frenchman now 35.
