Chelsea news: Blues suffer bank blow as fresh fears over club’s academy arise


Chelsea have been hit with fresh sanctions as their bank account is suspended by Barclays while the Blues fear they could lose some of their brightest prospects to rival clubs.

Chelsea currently find themselves in the middle of a lot of turmoil as the UK Government froze owner Roman Abramovich’s assets earlier this week.

The club has now had their bank account suspended by Barclays, who are investigating the club’s sporting license.

The sanctions placed on the Blues has lead to fears that their best prospects in their academy will be poached by rival clubs looking to take advantage of all the uncertainty.

On the pitch, Chelsea comfortably beat Norwich City on Thursday night and there’s been an injury update ahead of the Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Bank account suspended

Chelsea were hit with a fresh problem on Friday when Barclays suspended their bank account.

Twenty-four hours prior, Blues owner Roman Abramovich had his assets frozen by the UK Government, plunging the club’s future into turmoil.

Barclay’s decision will see them investigate Chelsea’s sporting license which sees the team operating under strict conditions.

Already the club has temporarily lost their £40million shirt sponsor deal with telecommunications company Three.

Academy prospects poached?

As Chelsea adapt to their new circumstances, there is worry within the building that their Under-16 side could lose it’s best players to rival clubs.

Part of the sanctions imposed on the club prevents them from handing out new contracts to players and staff.

And agents of Blues players have wasted no time in reaching out to rivals as they seek a potential way out, should Chelsea’s future remain cloudy.

Academy coaches Neil Bath and Jim Fraser could also depart as other teams look to take advantage.

Injury updates

Chelsea beat Norwich City on Thursday night and are next in action on Sunday against in-form Newcastle United.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were without five first-team players as they ran out 3-1 winners and picked up more injuries throughout the 90 minutes.

Though it’s not certain everyone will be fit and ready for the weekend clash, there is hope that some players who missed out through illness will return.

Cesar Azpilicueta was taken off at the break after not feeling well while Callum Hudson-Odoi returned to training on Thursday having last played in the 3-2 FA Cup win over Luton Town.
