Tiger Woods has ‘long way to go’ in his recovery from horrific car crash

Golf great Tiger Woods broke down in tears as he was inducted by his 14-year-old daughter Sam into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Sam had the honour of presenting her father with his prize, recognising his stellar career that has seen him widely recognised as golf’s greatest ever player.

Woods – who has won 82 PGA Tour titles and 15 major championships – paid tribute to his parents and family in an emotional speech on Thursday night.

Upon accepting the award, the 2019 Masters champion joked about losing a bet with good friend and 2020 US Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker.

He said: “Thank you. Crap, I just lost a bet to Stricker that I wouldn’t cry. Thank you, Sam.

“All the inductees, all the people who — all the past Hall of Famers who are here, players, the World Golf Hall of Fame committee, thank you for inducting me and passing me in here.”

Woods then went on to tell a number of anecdotes from his upbringing that in turn went on to help him secure the success he did, and become the PGA Tour’s joint most successful player of all time.

The American revealed, in order to kickstart his remarkable career, his parents took out a second mortgage to allow him to play, and thanked his mother Kultida and late father Earl for their support and sacrifices.

He continued: “So my family made a tough decision, and at the age of 14-1/2 we took out a second mortgage so I could go out and play the AJGA Tour.

“Mom stayed at home. Dad travelled. And I went out and played the AJGA Tour on our second mortgage.”

This dedication from his family clearly inspired the golf great, and Woods went on to add his remarkable achievements came down to a strong work ethic and dedication, rather than solely natural talent.

“So without the sacrifices of Mom who took me to all those junior golf tournaments, and Dad, who’s not here,” he added.

“But who instilled in me this work ethic to fight for what I believe in, chase after my dreams, nothing’s ever going to be given to you, everything’s going to be earned.

“If you don’t go out there and put in the work, you don’t go out and put in the effort, one, you’re not going to get the results, but two, and more importantly, you don’t deserve it. You need to earn it.”

Woods’ sentiments were also echoed by daughter Sam in her introduction speech, who praised her dad’s fight and hard work, referencing both his golf achievements and ability to recover from injuries sustained in a life-changing car accident last year.

She said: “You’re a fighter. ‘You’ve defied the odds every time.

“Being the first black and Asian golfer to win a major, being able to win your fifth Masters after back surgeries, and being able to walk just a few months after your crash.

“Dad, I inducted you into the Dad Hall of Fame a long time ago, but today, I am so proud to present my dad, Tiger Woods, into the World Golf Hall of Fame.”
