Canada is closing its airspace to Russian airliners effective immediately, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said on Sunday in a tweet.

Although several European countries had shut their airspace to Russian carriers in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine Russian airliners, Canada was continuing to allow them to fly through Canadian skies.

Russia’s flagship carrier Aeroflot operates multiple flights per day through Canadian airspace en route to the U.S. and beyond. It is a critical route for the airline.

Western carriers routinely fly over Russia — the largest country on earth — en route to Asia and the Middle East, although passenger aircraft are currently steering clear of Ukraine and parts of Belarus and western Russia.

In a tit-for-tat response, Russia has banned commercial flights from countries such as the U.K., Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic that have banned Russian flights from their airspace.
