Mikel Arteta determined to keep focus on Arsenal’s win over Southampton

Mesut Ozil scored a fabulous goal in Fenerbahce’s 3-2 defeat to Gaziantep on Monday evening.

The 92-cap Germany international is enjoying a resurgence in Turkey, nearly a year after his Arsenal struggles came to an end.

Ozil was one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe when he joined the Gunners in 2013, a year before he won the World Cup.

The former Real Madrid star quickly became a regular for Arsenal but was frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta shortly after his appointment in December 2019.

Ozil didn’t play during his final nine months at the Emirates – despite being fit and one of the club’s highest earners – before securing a move to Fenerbahce in January.

After a slow start to life in Turkey, he is producing the goods again. The ex-Schalke youngster has scored six goals in 17 appearances this term.

And Ozil’s most recent strike against Gaziantep was reminiscent of his time under legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The veteran produced a mesmerising dummy before gliding through the defence to receive a perfectly-timed through ball.

He then dinked his effort over the committed goalkeeper with ease and took the adulation of the crowd and his team-mates.

Ozil’s superb finish will leave many Gunners fans wondering what could have been, as doubts grow over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future.

Like Ozil, Aubameyang is one of Arsenal’s highest earners and finds himself on the brink of being frozen out by Arteta at the Emirates.

The captain was left out of the team’s recent 3-0 victory against Southampton and has struggled for goals under the current boss.

Aubameyang hit the back of the net 43 times in the Premier League during his first two seasons at the club but has managed just 25 league goals since Arteta’s appointment.

“It’s like the Mesut Ozil situation all over again,” recently warned former Tottenham striker and Arsenal fan Darren Bent.

“We’ve got an over-age player, he’s not old, but he’s getting on in age that we can’t get rid of and on really high wages. So what do we do?

“When you have a centre-forward like Aubameyang, I’ve always said, ‘You’ve got to play him, you’ve got to play him.’

“He’s your best goalscorer, you’ve got to find a way to keep playing him and he’ll get the goals. But I understand Mikel Arteta’s point of view because, at the minute, he is offering absolutely nothing. Arsenal are playing with ten men.”

Despite a difficult end to his Arsenal career, Ozil remains a club legend after making more than 250 appearances in all competitions.

“I will continue to support them in every game they play I will be a Gunner for life – no doubt about that,” he promised on leaving.

“Hearing my name chanted around the Emirates will forever give me goosebumps, and the memories I’ve made putting on this jersey will stick with me for life.”
