Gary Neville delivers Anthony Martial verdict in light of Manchester United exit wish

Gary Neville has backed Anthony Martial’s desire to leave Manchester United with the former defender saying that the “time is right” for the 26-year-old to leave.

After starring for the Reds in the 2019-20 season, where he finished as the club’s top goalscorer, the Frenchman has failed to make an impact amid an increase in competition for United’s forward places.

As a result, on Friday afternoon, Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley publicly declared his client’s intent to depart Old Trafford in January.

He featured in Michael Carrick’s final game in caretaker charge in the 3-2 win over Arsenal but suffered a knee injury and missed the win over Crystal Palace and the draw with Young Boys.

His representative told Sky Sports : “Anthony wishes to leave the club in January.

“He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

And Neville believes now is the ideal opportunity to sell the France international.

“I think if they can get good money for him… I probably would have said if they could have got good money for him in the summer, players that they’ve got then yes I would,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think that now the time has come. I think Manchester United have always been wary of getting burnt. Of him leaving for £25m and then going on to become a £100m player because he is a special talent.

“I just don’t think he’ll ever work at Old Trafford to the extent they’ve got Rashford, Greenwood, Ronaldo, Cavani, other players as well.

“‘I just think now is the time for him to leave and go and play regular football so I think it’s the right time.”
