Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo’s touching message to Pele with Brazil legend in hospital

Cristiano Ronaldo has passed on a touching message to Pele after the Brazil legend was admitted to hospital again this week.

The Manchester United star responded to a post from the 81-year-old on Instagram, in which he explained why he was back in hospital in Sao Paulo following the removal of a colon tumour earlier this year.

After his procedure, Pele explained in September that he would need ‘follow up treatment’ as he underwent chemotherapy sessions.

Pele has been in and out of hospital over the last few years, having suffered mobility issues after a botched hip replacement in 2012, while he has also undergone kidney and prostate procedures in recent years.

Posting a picture of himself in his bed at the Albert Einstein Hospital, Pele wrote on Instagram: “Friends, since September 30th, when I left the hospital, you know that I have been having small chemotherapy sessions as part of my treatment.

“Today I’m at Albert Einstein doing the last session of 2021. I wanted to share this achievement with you.

“After all, every little victory is a reason to celebrate, don’t you think?

“I’m going to take this chance to do a new battery of exams, so I’m going to stay here for a few days. Don’t worry, I’m just getting ready for the holiday season!”

The Brazil legend has received a flood of supportive messages from fans around the world, including a number of football stars past and present.

And in amongst the messages was Ronaldo, who posted “Forca amigo”, which roughly translates as “stay strong my friend”.

Ronaldo has this year surpassed Pele’s career tally for goals, having bettered his record of 767 while at Juventus, before going on to recently cross the 800-goal mark with United.

Tweeting a picture of himself with Ronaldo back in March, Pele wrote: “What a beautiful journey you are having!

“I admire you a lot and this is no secret to anyone. Congratulations on breaking my record of goals in official matches.

“I leave this photo in your honour, with great affection, as a symbol of a friendship that has existed for many years.”
